Video of some elegant skiing and ski racing from the 1950s...
Believed to be mostly Onondaga Ski Club in Syracuse, New York
The race footage showing the "Lift and Replace" uphill ski techniques on 220cm straight wooden skis. Ski equipment has certainly changed!

Thank Mike for the vid. It's both fun and educational. The very strong pole plant action from 11:00 onward tells a lot the origin of poling. Actually something to gain just by looking at it. :)

As I said in my previous posting, equipment and technique goes hand in hand. Changes in equipment have changed the way we ski.

Just come across another video showing some elegant skiing:

even with modern equipment, i'd probably look just as clumsy if i try to race... :D
the slalom race look fun. i admire the guy who walked through the flags that he missed when he fell.
i can't even do the slalom on wii!
I was amazed by the OP's link as it refers to Loveland Pass which I have just visited in Colorada.
Loveland isn't the easiest resort in Colorada as it lies at the entrance of the Eisenhower Tunnel. The funnel effect makes it the windiest place to ski. However I have no idea the place has such a long history. Many motorists would stop their cars at the top of the Loveland Pass and ski into the resort as their way of back country skiing. Loveland does have a chairlift taking the skiers to 12700ft (Over 3800m).
Note how they used to ski off-piste with those long straight skis: :icon_adore:

Those were really long boards (almost as long as ski-jump skis of today) and pretty good telemark skiing in the 1930's considering these stiff long boards (skis?). What do you think Freeskier?
Now watch this video to the end and see how good this guy was doing ballet and 'free skiig'. You can lean back to ski if you can ski like him -- amazing !

Looks like that was taken in the late 70s early 80s, those Rossignol skis looked familiar.
More clips showing how they skied with the traditional long straight skis: :icon_adore:

I believe one of the skiers in the video was John Clendenin.
Haha... you must be kidding !!!
John Clendenin parted with HH years and years ago. And appeared here as a student, and skied like that ? You are insulting JC.
Sorry, I posted the wrong link, (video has now been replaced) meant to show the K2 Demo Team of 1971.
The K2 Demo Team of 1971 included Charlie McWilliams, Pat Bauman, John Clendenin, Bob Griswold, and Jim Stelling.
Amazing... how they were able to ski deep, deep powder with those skinny straight skis.
This is their other video:

How about the Interski 1968 in Aspen and Garmisch in 1971
The events were held every 3 years for a time and since 1971, they have been held every 4years.
The congresses are organised every four years. The last four congresses were held in Japan (1995), Norway (1999), Switzerland (2003) and Korea (2007).
The next one will be in St. Anton a. A./Austria (January 2011).
How about the way they ski moguls with those long straight skis

:clap1: :icon_good: So, Brian - are you going to get a one piece ski suit this weekend? :icon_adore:
In our group, at least 2 people have one piece suit. :) So we don't need a 3rd one. One piece is still okay, but the pink color..... err...
Here below is a video on Alf Engen, who went to USA in 1929 and developed the Alta ski area in Utah:

PSIA description of parallel turn with "straight skis":
Secure the inside edge of the downhill ski with a preparatory flexing of the ankles and knees to form a platform for the turn, plant the pole downhill from your toes, rise up off the platform toward downhill rapidly enough to take pressure off the skis, pivot the tips toward the intended direction of turning, change to the new edges as you reweight the skis, continue the steering that began with the pivoting.
With straight ski - Initiate ankle roll (a quick motion), followed immediately/simultaneously by a strong knee inward/forward pressure to set edge and carve (the harder the set, the tighter the turn). Keep body weight over the skis, they do not edge as well. Important to keep skis tighter together as it will help somewhat for the body position, knees forward, little more upright and don't sit back, completing the turn and transition is very similar. Shoulders typically stay square to the fall line.

There was a Hotdoggers Reunion in Sun Valley last year,
Those showed up were Wayne Wong, Greta O'Brien, Suzy Chaffee, Matt Broze, Glen Plake, Penelope Street and others. They still can ski well. :icon_adore: :icon_good:
