I concur. Good skiing in Shiga Kogen :) but the Prince Hotel there is a bit basic. :(

志賀 is definitely the biggest and most well linked between mountains, esp for intermediate and above skiers but overall food not great. For beginners, Rusutsu is a great resort with nice long easy cruising runs. Food there is excellent. The crabs, sushi & sashimi at the buffet restaurant are fantastic!!!

I have only been to Happo One, Goryu & Hakuba 47, Nozawa Onsen (2x), Niseko (2x) and Rusutsu.
Niseko is my favourite so far.
I would like to go to Shiga Kogen next year.:)

Just got back from Niseko, my 2nd time there. Although the runs are quite interesting, Niseko suffers from the problem of bad weather, always windy or foggy, and you hardly see the sun....

I completely agree with you.

I never liked Niseko -- it is only good for advanced skiers longing for knee deep powder and don't want to pay for heliskiing:)

For Christmas time, it is better to go to Hokkaido for guaranteed snow. All resorts on Honshu are risky for lack of snow.

Me neither. To choose between Rusutsu and Niseko, I choose the former. But I do not agree that Niseko is only good for advance skiers because personally I do not think Niseko is challenging enough. ;)

At Christmas time, the snow in Hokkaido is definitely more reliable. :)

Well, by advanced skiers, I mean skiers that are able to ski knee deep or waist high powder, and to venture into the trees.

Usually snow is not a problem in Niseko, but bad weather is. I went one Christmas & piled with snow but the wind was sooooo strong that I could hardly stand up still, also very foggy so I got really scared.....

Shiga, Hakuba, Nozawa, Zao, Niseko, Rusutzu, Furano, Naeba...they are all good to me.

I don't think there is so-called the best resort in Japan. Whether a resort is good or not depends on a lot of factors like

Who do you go with - your choice becomes very different when going with kids
What do you want to do there - ski, food, onsen, sightseeing?
How much you are willing to spend - what hotel you stay makes a lot of difference my friend...
The season, the weather and the snow condition when you were there
Different people have different tastes. So asking for the best resort is like asking for the best restaurant in town - the answer is never an objective one.
