The 2009-10 ski season will see the opening of The Vale, Niseko's latest hotel/residential complex with 49 apartments ranging from hotel rooms to studios and a luxury four-bedroom penthouse.

The development boasts 10 private onsens, an outdoor heated swimming pool, restaurants, an après-ski terrace and Niseko's first ice rink.

The Vale is scheduled to open in December 2009 and will be located only just over 100 feet from the Family Ace chair lift and less than 500 feet from the ski village center.

Warning - not going to be cheap :D

flight ticket - from 4xxx to 1xxxx depending on when u book ur flight and ur date of departure. fly economy, of course! those helping the plane to get more forward balance is strongly advised to ignore my posting.
accommodation - from 8xx pp upto 2xxx a night pp depending on which hotel & when u want the room?
lift pass- like 3xx a day?

u forgot the food & wine! and not to mention if anything one needs a rescue service by Japanese? thats the hard part to give a general idea.

and of course, the sport massage to sooth out the very tight muscle by Japanese girls @ 500hkd for 50 minutes.

CX has direct flight from HK to Sapporro 4 times a week, but the fare is usually higher than others (cheaper if you change flight at Tokyo or Osaka). You can check their website for detail (ski season - guess HK$7000)

As for ski pass, youy can check Niseko's web site:
http://www.niseko.ne.jp/en/index.html

For accomodation, those purpose built hotels close to the ski slope is not cheap, you get a better price if you book through an agent (eg. Tonichi Travel) and book early.

When does season start and end, and is there a high season (higher costs) and low season period. What's the transfer like from airport for backpacker skiier ??? (no Japanese speaking)

Normally, the season for Hokaido is mid December to end March/early April.
it is the same all over the world, the price shoots up during the holiday period - during Christmas and New Year period. Although Chinese New Year is not celebrated in Japan but the air fare is high because many people in Hong Kong wants to go away.

Transfer from New Chitose Airport to Niseko is easy, there is a bus service from the airport and you can book in advance.

There are numerous postings on Niseko in the old forum, lots of info in there. :)

due to global warming and being a low altitude resort you can safely add a marsh land season. meaning u r very likely to encounter super wet snow? :)

perhaps we have to ski in val thorens for dry powder, eventually.

Well, get wet snow anywhere late season but can usually minimise its encounter by picking time of day , slope aspects to ski The up side of course is nice ambient temperture, sunshine, and hopfully spring snow.
Low altitide resort in Japan may not necessary associated with poor snow (not skiied in the East yet, planning to go) because of its latitude further north compare with the Alps and Rockies I imagine will be like East coast of USA and Northern Europe where there are no high mountain but plenty of snow.
In fact, I came across quite a lot of comment regarding powder skiing in Japan due to the cold dry air coming from the Artic North/Russia. THe complete change to culture is a big bonus too hense my interest in visiting hopfully in the near future.

Val thoren in the 3valley pass is high altitude resort, my experience staying in high altitude is a bit of a gamble because if you get bad weather or snow. It will be a complete whiteout. High wind. and everything closed and you are left with nothing to do and go
So I usually opt for a place lower down so there will be alternatives like tree area where you can get visiability. You will sleep better too This high altitude air does not seem to suit lowlanders Powder snow??? well, I think it,s like winning the lottery if you get it during a one week holiday,

Early March probably the best time , roughly speaking, 3/4 of winter is gone, snow asured, days are longer, sun is higher up thus ambient temp higher also, snow can be very good in North , Noeth/East North/west facing slopes. even with no recent snow falls. and if you are lucky and get fresh snow, can be heavenly making fresh tracks under blue skys
