Was there three years ago, what would like you to know? You must stay in one of the hotels on the mountain to appreciate the sun rise etc. We stayed in the best one, but still its a two star hotel in western standards at the best. Everything was so humid and wet, including the mattress. However, you have no choice. The sceneries are different from the western mountains, to me, I am used to be skiing all over the world, so its not too impressive to me. Prepare to have lots of hiking.....:p

Thanks for the response,
Is it easy to get there on our own or is it better to join an organised trip from HK company. We all went to Xian a couple of years ago having joined a HK tour and very put off by taken to shops everyday wasting a lot of time We do not want to travel all these way to go shoping.
Not really mind the 2 star standards provided its clean and good facilities, any address via web so we can do a bit of looking up ?? where is this place and does it have a web page/address?
Yes, we are up to hiking, do we need to hire a guide and if so how? is security OK to go our own?
You indicated that it was wet/ what month you were there or is it wet all year round??
many thanks

Kasin,
I too dislike the shopping "side trip" but I supposed the shops subsidise the fare in a way.

No matter how much I do not like joinning organised tour, China is different (for personal safety reason). Personally I think it is good idea to tag along with China Travel Service (they have better connection in case something goes wrong) or Modern China Travel (most of their tours do not have shopping side-trip).

Here is the hotel we stayed on the mountain, be prepared to pay six star prices. You will pay much less if you stay off the mountain, its like to stay in a ski in/out hotel vs. off the mountain hotel. We were there in the summer 2005, supposely in the "dry" season, but since there was so much fog in the mountain (and its known for the fog), everything was so wet.

Three of us took a "private" tour with one guide. We did not have much shopping but still the guide had arranged some. It was very expensive but this was an add-on and after thought type of arrangement. I think the guide was necessary cuase if you go there by yourself you could not find and know so many "stories" amd "tales" about the rocks and trees on the mountain. Chinese like to personify objects based on their shape. You must have certain level of knowledge of Chinese to appreciate the stories, as lots of connotation will be lost in translation. Without the guide, its just like a hiking expedition, nothing sepecial.

If you do not wish to have shopping, you can arrange the traveling yourself and hire a local guide just for the mountain tour. Or you can get a package like this:

http://www.mangocity.com/MangoPkgWeb/queryProductAction.do?operate=queryOneProduct&PkgProductLineId=29521

but asking them to reseve on the mountain hotels.
