It is always sad to hear people died while skiing. :(

Question - were these incidents avoidable?

Yes, it is always sad to hear this kind of news.

I realised that there were many fatal skiing accidents caused by hitting trees.
But not certain if those vitcims were experienced skiers or beginners. Was it because they skied too fast that caused out of control and hit trees??

But if one skies not to exceed his/her ability, it can always reduce risks.

I guess most of the tree accidents were related to speed + lost control. The rest is probably related to tree well.

More info to the ice cornice accident:

He (Witness) recalled seeing him fight for survival during the fall.
"He was trying to swim his way to the top. [After an avalanche, the snow] turns slushy until it stops [tumbling] and then it packs down really hard. While it's still fluid, you try and swim to the top."

One thing good about skiing in the Alps is that you don't have to worry about trees getting in your way - almost all the ski slopes are above the tree line, ie. no trees. ;)

If not hitting trees, then can hit rocks. :D:D

Small rocks are usually covered by snow, big rocks are usually avoidable, so no worry.

It is the dead bodies lying on snow that we skied over (just kidding.)
