I just wonder if any death due to snowsport in Korea beforehand.
My partner saw some players packed in bag in orange colour without showing their faces and transported desperatedly downhill.

It is sad to hear that news.
For those covering all the faces during transportation do not mean fatal accident. The rescuers may do this to protect the patient from snow splashing on their faces when being transported with a snowbike.
That's sad for a fourteen. RIP.

RIP how did it happen?!
if he knew it is too hard, then he should call for help.
Like last time, i went up to the top, i took a look then told the ski patrol and they go down on the lift with me..

It is really sad to hear that.
I guess what we could learn from this accident is always be conservative. Don't over estimate your ability. I just don't understand why the parents would let a 14 years old ski alone? This is just a recipe for disaster because anything could happen on the hill and the young boy just wouldn't have the experience to cope with it.
Still feeling sorry for the parents.:(

I think this highlights what icy surface(most korean runs are) could endanger lives. If the run was powdery he could at most got his leg twisted. I particularly agree with what HM said. :(
It is really so sad.
The run where the accident occured seems very narrow. And why does the safety net have iron poles instead of fiber-glass or plastic?
Beginners need to learn and to control speed and turning before venture off to difficult terrains -- I guess the poor kid did not know that it was a 'difficult' slope and icy.......
Even for more experienced skier/rider, we need always be in control, and not to exceed speed that is not comfortable for us.
it's very sad indeed. very shocked to hear that a relative beginner can crash so badly... :(
my friend went to high1 with her 10-year-old son not long ago. the boy was skiing faster than her, so she could not catch up, therefore the boy sometimes skied by himself.
i was quite scared when she told me. now that i hear this news i feel even more scared.
perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to blame the parents. teenage boys are very difficult to control.
Any one got more info about the "apollo" course?

"Apollo " have 3 slope, 2 are advance & 1 is more advance. I think the parents should not let their child to go down alone!!
According to this official website
http://www.high1.co.kr/eng/ski/01_02_eng_frame.asp
there are 6 slopes, 5 advanced and 1 expert. You can also click in the pdf file to have a very clear look of the slope info.

High 1, Apollo is more advanced ski area, it is very difficult for beginner and intermediate skier. In three or four years ago I been there in Spring after High 1 opened in four months. I found the Apollo and Victoria are advanced ski area so I have not skiing in these two areas, I just toke the beginner and intermediate areas. However High 1 is built inside the forest and far away Seoul but not much enough natural snow, at least the facilities and environment is very well, it is good place for skiing enjoy with family. I really so sad hear the somebody death from ski sports, I hope the boy could rest in peace of God. I hope all of skiers whatever expert, intermediate or beginner we must take care of self on skiing.

Korean ski resorts always have this kind of fence to avoid skiers/boarders who lost control sliding off the trails. I guess its because many runs are icy and narrow with mini cliffs or trees immediately off the trails. So there are always risk that one might hit the posts instead of the nets. Again what we could learn from this tragedy is perhaps get yourself a helmet and ski/board within your ability.
From the map, there is a green run (AT2) of the Athena course next to the Apollo course. May be the boy just want to ski on the green run but turn to the wrong direction and skied down via AP5???
Would anyone who have been there share your opinion?

Nets need poles for support, but should not be made of iron or aluminum. Look at the Olympics downhill or GS nets, the poles are not metallic but fiber-glass or plastic.

The ski resort might want something more solid and permanent, that's why they use metal. But not covering any metal structure with impact cushion is unthinkable and stupid. Downhill nets are different, they are there only for the competition. Usually use softer materials to absorb the impact. I have seen a racer who went through 3 layer of those nets and hit a tree on TV. So those nets sometimes also fail.
Nobody wants anyone to get hurt, the netting is there to stop stray skiers or riders. The metal poles to keep the netting in place are obviously badly designed and that was the responsibility of the resort operator.
Let's hope the Korean learnt from this tragic accident. :(

Hight One
Sorry to hear this sad news! May God gives his parents peace and support in this critical period. :(
This boy is my Taekwondo Student, really siad to hear the news today!
I am so sorry hearing about the accident.
Just want to emphasize that importance of a ski helmet. I am not sure if the boy had it on or not. But, had he had the helmet, he might be saved.
A personal experience, at the last run in Squaw, after all those double diamonds, I was really tired and had soft legs. But I had to ride the Red Dog chair to get back to parking lot. Just before reaching the entrance of Red Dog in the flat area, I caught an edge and fell hard from the left, my head hit hard directly to the hard snow so was my shoulder. The impact on my head would have put me into a concusison or even killed me, I was fortunate to be saved by my helmet and ended with only a sore shoulder.
So guys, put on your helmet, it might have saved your life.

:( Skiing is sometimes similar to driving. Control the speed and look further away and
plan your route esp. when the speed is increasing. It is quite important to wear helmet since sometimes it is the ski which hit your head when you fall violently.
I think beginner should learn how to control the speed and slow down quickly even though he is skiing an advance course. Afterall, ski slowly and highlight the skills rather than speed is sometimes more enjoyable.:p

I met someone who knew the parents of this kid last weekend, I was told he was killed due to broken neck - unfortunately ski helmet would NOT have saved his neck. :(

Well, the opposite is also true, I'm afraid.

It is not a very valid comment for a 14 yrs old boy... when you were that young, most things in life are new and parental guidiance is really needed.
I was frustrated with the tight control of my parents when I was young, but if I were parent one day, I may at least won't let him ski until 18, or go with him with my close supervision.

I'm a parent and know many teenagers, to many of them, "Don't under-estimate yourself and over-estimate the difficulties" is a valid advice.
A generalized statement like that (just like "mother is a woman") is always true but not very useful, that is what I want to say in the original reply.
For this incident, accident is just an accident, we feel sorry. However, even if you do not allow kids to ski, accident could happen. Do you remember weeks ago an old lady fall out of the window and kill another lady? Will you avoid crossing the street to avoid traffic accidents? Even if you stay at home, the building could collapse.
P.S. What do you think you could do if you are in "close supervision"?

Feel less guilty.
Accident is not just accident, skiing is much dangerous than crossing a street, and most importantly, if u really hit by a car due to accident, the reality is easier to be accepted as it's really unavoidable. A human being is hard to avoid blaming himself not caring enough to his son. It's more painful than die.
Close supervision means within visible area. I can shout to ask him to stop if he goes too far or too fast. For example, I take windsurfing or kayak course in LCSD, the instructor will ask the students to "follow the leader", go behind one by one.
I really feel sad even i am not the father. he's really tough.
A son with good growing path, study in QC he must be an outstanding kid. I think before the accident the father is admired by many others.

If you have lived long enough, i.e. getting old, then you will begin to believed that many accidents occurred to you are designated, many things seems to co-ordinate together to lead you to the accident. This is not a scientific thing, but is just the feeling.

If you have to go, you have to go. Nobody knows for sure what is going to happen tomorrow. :(

I am a parent. This is way too tight.

I believe this is correct.

I am sorry to say that by the time your kid is 18, he will be supervising you in skiing, not the other way round.
Just curious whether this statement "Don't under-estimate yourself and over-estimate the difficulties" is valid in this case?
In this particular case, no.
Agree without any reservation. Meanwhile, I also agree that development of self-confidence is very important but over-confidence is very risky in many sports. Maybe some teenagers are used to click the button 'undo' to restart the game but in the reality this button does not exist. So, I still keep my original statement as my rule to cope with different sports.
