Hi, everybody!
My family is going to Hokaido at Christmas.
I want to teach my 8-year-old son skiing, but I haven't been the 2 resorts before.
Would you mind telling me which one is more suitable for me? :)
I ski in Kiroro once and it is a very easy course. It is suitable for beginners though int & expert skier will find it boring. Also another thing that I prefer Kiroro being it is very close to Ontaru and you can stay in Sapporo / Ontaru instead of resort. (Remark : There is only one hotel next to Kiroro.)

I have been to Kiroro before but not Tomamu. For Kiroro, it is very suitable for teaching young kids skiing there. To make your life easier, try staying at the Mountain Hotel side (right next to ski slope) for easy access to restaurant & hotel room.
Try seaching HKSSA archive web site for more information about Kiroro (well, at least I had a post there about it.).

Tomamu is okay la (I have not been to Kiroro).
I will rank my preference (total experience) on the resorts that I have been to (in Hokkaido):
1. Rusutsu
2. Furano
3. Tomamu
4. Niseko (more challenging terrains than Tomamu)
5. Sohoro (the mountain is small but Club Med is excellent for family with kids)

The following is quoted from my previous posts about Tomamu and Kiroro at the old HKSSA forum:
Tomamu
http://www.snowtomamu.jp/ (http://www.snowtomamu.jp/)
7.2.2008 pm to 10.2.2008:都在Tomamu 滑雪。
Gondola station
2) 由Silver Bell 去 Lift 6
3) 由Naster 去Lift 9
住宿
Za.Tower 的房租很合理,7000yen–個人–天,包–天lift ticket (including night ski),而且是真正ski-in ski-out。
(Mikaku)
2) Kantorii Tei
3) Ninimupuri
4) Aprico
Kiroro
I had been to Kiroro two years ago (and also April 2007) and to Rusutsu 5 years ago. My general comments are:
Size:
While I have not made actual comparison, my impression is that the size of Kiroro is similar to Sahoro, and a bit smaller than Rusutsu. If I use a ski resort at Honshu for comparison, the size of Kiroro is a little bit smaller than Naeba (excluding Kagura, Tashiro etc).
Piste:
It offers different level of pistes, from black (more than 33 degree with moguls) to green. Very funny actually (of course I do not refer to the black with moguls). Given the size of the ski resort, the length of each piste on average is not too long (on average 1 to 2 km).
Personally I like the "Dynamic Course", an intermediate piste of 4 km which runs from the peak to the base.
Snow:
People should have nothing to complain about the snow in Hokkaido. Powder, of course.
In April the snow at low altitude becomes slush, however. At the peak it is still powder and sometimes icy.
Accommodation:
People can choose to stay at the 2 hotels at the resort. Mountain Hotel is a ski-in ski-out one, while at the Piano Hotel people has to take free shuttle bus plying between the Hotel and the ski resort. It only takes about 2 minutes (Kiroro is owned by Yamaha, hence the name of the Hotel).
The rooms are as comfortable as those in Rusutsu.
In April 2007 I stayed at the Piano Hotel. The food is good and there are 14 resturants for you to choose. The cuisines include Japanese (伝統traditional, osushi, 居酒屋 izakaya, お好み焼き okonomiyaki, ラメン ramen), French, buffet and Chinese. The varieties, in my opinion, are more than those in Rusutsu.
As an alternative, one can stay at Otaru and take Chuo bus to the resort. Some hotels at Otaru also offer free shuttle bus, like the Hilton Otaru. I don’t know whether they have similar offer this year. It takes about 40 minutes from Otaru to Kiroro.
Taking taxi will be faster (about 20 minutes). The ordinary fare is 6,000 yen, but some hotels may offer discount, say 40% off, and they will arrange the taxi for you. I had tried once. Very speedy (because of
speeding).
Onsen:
Kiroro Piano Hotel has onsen called "Kita no yu" with 露天風呂. It is good. It also has an indoor swimming pool and public bath (I had not tried). The Mountain Centre also has an onsen.
Rusutsu does not have any onsen.
Access:
There are ski buses which run between the Chitose Airport or from Sapporo to Kiroro direct. It takes about 1 hours 40 minutes from the Chitose Airport to Kiroro. The link of one the bus companies is as follows:
http://www.goodsports.co.jp/eng/bus/index.html (http://www.goodsports.co.jp/eng/bus/index.html)
Some people will take JR from the Airport to Otaru, then take taxi or Chuou bus to Kiroro.
very informative and useful, thanks so much :)
I want to stay at the mountain hotel for ski-in-ski-out convenience but most packages are for the Piano Hotel only. Can anyone advise if the shuttle service to the ski area frequent? I'm worried about long lines during the "morning peak hour".
Also, I see that many packages include dinner. Does anyone know if this refers to the standard buffet (and is it any good)? Many thanks!!

Tomaru斜好多, 連beginner slope都好斜, 而且唔係ski-in ski-out.
Thank you very much for your information
I have decided to go to Kiroro.
