What is the made of the binding?

To ensure correct positioning of the binding, the manufacturers (eg. salomon, marker, look etc) have their own jig (a template for drilling the position of the screw holes) for binding installation. Unfortunately, 99.9% of us, the recreational skiers, do not have this jig.

Not that you cannot install the binding without the jig, just means with the jig, the chance of getting it wrong is more or less elimated.

If it is an integrated binding (say on rail), then you may not need to drill at all. And I did my drilling once with just a paper template. You will want to have a special drill bit though.

Brian, you are absolute correct. That's why we need to know the make of the binding & skis.

Definitely don't want to drill through the skis. :icon_cry:

Also refer to the following website for reference:

One other point you ought to note - that is you might void the warranty on your skis / bindings if you don't use a certified shop to mount your bindings.

ZagZag, I strongly suggest you get a professional shop to do it. Not only must install correctly, but also need to adjust the binding correctly according to the ability, height, weight of your friend as well as the length of ski and flexibility of the binding.
I do not think your friend want to risk breaking his/her knees due to wrong installation or adjustment, right?
I think a few ski shop in HK can do for you.
Or, you can install it when you go to ski area. Sure those ski shop can do it for you.

Zagzag, if you do decide to install the binding yourself, I think you will need a 5/32" (4.1mm) drill bit if your skis have a metal top sheet. Otherwise use a 3.5mm drill bit (with 9mm drill depth).
