香港天文台 於今天下午1時52分，錄得這次地震，指震中位於日本本州東面近岸，即仙台之東約180公里，震級為黎克特制7.9級。但其後美國 地質勘探局把震級，上調至8.8級。
大地震後，東京成田機場和羽田機場關閉，本州東北地區的新幹線亦已暫停運作。東京港口有建築物冒濃煙。

I think they have now revised it to 9.0.

A magnitude 9 earthquake is 1.58 times bigger than a magniture 8.8 earthquake on a seismogram, but is 2 times stronger (energy release)

A 9.0 compared to a 8.0 is 10 times bigger, and is 31.6 times stronger (energy release)

It was the last day of my skiing in Club Med Sahoro when the earthwuake happened. I skiied down a slope to the bottom of a drag lift. Then I noticed ALL lifts were stopped. Then the drag lift was on again. I didn't notice if other lifts were on as I was waiting for the drag lift. I took the drag lift up and ski down another slop with a chairlift by its side. Though the chairlift stopped, I didn't realise it's a problem and down the middle of the slope, someone asked me if service of the chairlift was stopped. I said no as I remembered the operating hours and I saw club med instructor with students down the same slope. So I continue and at the bottom of the slope, the chairlift did stop service and we have to hike up as the hotel is halfway up that slope. Someone mentioned earthquake but I didn't think there was an earthquake at that moment. Then when I got back to the hotel it was already a very hot serious topic.

Just curious if anything happened to Hawaii. CNN keeps reporting the quake and made all sorts of analysis during that day and according to those analysis, Hawaii is the 1st to encounter tsunami that night. Did anything happened to Hawaii?

Water rushed ashore in Honolulu, swamping the beach in Waikiki and surging over a break wall in the world-famous resort but stopping short of the area's high-rise hotels.

Waves about 7 feet high were recorded on Maui, and 3 feet in Oahu and Kauai. Officials warned that the waves would continue and could become larger, and a scientist at the tsunami warning center said there was likely damage to mooring facilities and piers.

北京時間3月31日中午12點，由中國三一重工無償捐贈給日本東京電力公司的62米泵車正式開始為福島核電站1號機組注水作業，這一工作持續了4個小時，期間設備運行一切正常，降溫效果非常好，贏得了現場日方工作人員的一片歡呼。如無特殊情況，4月1日上午該設備將繼續進行注水作業。

在東京電力公司宣佈福島核電站6個機組全部報廢後，即有專業人士表示，為核電機組注水降溫是報廢過程中的重要步驟之一。據瞭解，報廢共分三個步驟：第一步是停止反應堆的運行；第二步是對核電機組注水降溫；最後一步即用混凝土對已冷卻下來的核電機組封堆。目前據日本官方消息透露，1號機組反應堆核心溫度還高達2500度左右，因此現階段最為重要的是對相關機組注水降溫，這一工作將持續約一個月。
香港文匯報記者從三一重工方面獲悉，為保障相關人員的安全，福島核電站指揮中心嚴格控制了注水降溫工作時間，一次性注水時間控制在三個小時以內，且輪換相關工作人員。與現場其他公司設備相比，其他公司的泵車由於展開支腿和布臂架時間較長，因此操作手被檢測出被輻射指數為26毫西弗；而三一重工泵車支腿展開和布臂架用時較短，操作手輻射檢測僅為2.4毫西弗，其良好的性能獲得了日方人員的高度評價。
此前，為了注水降溫工作的順利實施，在三一重工與東京電力公司的緊密配合下，該台62米泵車歷經設備調試、陸海運輸、操作手培訓、打水測試共計8天左右的前期工作，並於3月27日到達福島核電站指揮中心。 另悉，三一重工總裁向文波於3月31日凌晨1時18分在其微博上透露，該公司已經收到東京電力希望購買三一30台56米以上長臂架泵車的意向。

A luxury hotel in Tokyo that has closed is to be used to accommodate evacuees from Fukushima, where workers continue efforts to control the damaged nuclear power plant.

The Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka, which opened in 1955, was closed on Thursday because of the age of its facilities. Most of the structure is to be demolished eventually.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to use the hotel as a temporary home for evacuees from Fukushima Prefecture for 3 months from around April 9th until the end of June.

The hotel says its 700 guestrooms can accommodate about 1,600 evacuees.

The chief of the hotel's accommodations staff, Mariko Kadowaki, said she's sad to see the hotel close, but that she will do her best to help people affected by the disaster.

Given the nickname "Akapuri" and known for its beautiful night view, the hotel was popular among young people during Japan's bubble economy in the late 1980s to the early 90s.
