I went skiing in USA instead of Japan this year It is cheaper than going to Japan. :bill:
So I am going to ski in USA again next year (nice powder). :icon_good:
Having said that there is nothing to worry about if you plan to go to Hokkaido.
I have been thinking this question as well. As the half life of radiation is 32 years, there is not much difference unless we go after 32 years. So, I am ready to go when things are back on track. Checked the websites of Naebe and Zao, look like both are closed this season.
Wish Japan can overcome this tragedy.

Totally agree, I almost got hit by a HK snowboarder on a gentle green run since he ride straight and I was in his blind spot. Skier usually can see people down the slope better.
Don't you think of going to ski on Whistler this season, we are waiting for you.
Wish Japan can overcome this tragedy.
I'll still go for HKSSA ski trips to Hokkaido or Nagano area...:icon_giveup::icon_giveup:

You will have to worry about the snow condition more than the nuclear pollution. The snow is melting fast these few days as the temperature rise.
At the end of April, the ski area will be limited to the top part of the mountain. There is a big chance that one have to download by the Ace two quad lift. If you are a good skier/rider and don't mind to ski on any snow condition and limited area, then you might be even be able to enjoy the fine weather.

I honestly dunno why people are so worried about the radiation situation. Hker breath in all sorts of pollutant everyday(2nd smoke), car exhaust gas etc..... Worrying something that will be diluted to an infintisinmal level is a little too much. I laugh at those people who scramble to buy salt/mike powder/Japanese food:mi:

Totally agreed.

Yes. Definitely. Skiing in Japan is sure a nice experience I refuse to give it up easily.
Keep going. Show our support to them. I usually ski Japan twice a year. I will make it 3 in coming season!
I also definitely skiing in Japan, I have placed ski equipment in Zao and Hukuba.
Skiing in Korea was a terrible experience to me. The ski maaner in Korea is suck.
In Asai, Japan is the only place I will go for skiing.

I won't go to Japan for skiing because the ski resorts there are not as good as those in the states.

Sure, that is your personal preference.
I agree that the Japanese ski resorts are small (they have hills rather than mountains) compare with the States, but for people in HK the flight to Japan is only 5 hours (vs 12 to 14 hours to West Coast) and no jet lag. Also, Japanese food is a lot more tasty and healthier than those US junk food.
If you have a chance. try skiing in the Alps, you won't be disappointed.:icon_good:

Agree. I also like to enjoy the transitional outdoor onsen after skiing. :icon_good:

About Japanese food, yes, that's my favorite.
I have skied at Hakuba One. I was very disappointed.
About Alps, I've never been there, but that's on my TODO list.

Why disappointed? Can you share your experience at Hakuba?
.... I have skied at Hakuba One. I was very disappointed....
I have not been to Hakuba myself ( been to Naeba, Shiga Kogen, Niseko, Rusutsu & Kiroro), but I have skied in the Alps, Whistler, North & South Tahoe, Australia, New Zealand & Chile. So, I can understand your disappointment, especially if you have to fly all the way from USA.
To be honest, I get bored after 3 days skiing in the same resort in Japan.
But for us in HK, Japan is better than Korea and China for skiing. :love2:
Mike is right. Alps is the place to go for serious skiing. The hills and the terrain in Japan is too small. I love Japanese food too but I will have them in Hong Kong or in a few days leisure trip to Tokyo. Onsen is good but I prefer the wine and atmosphere in the Alps resort. For me, the terrain, wine and atmosphere completely outweigh the Japanese food and the onsen and the travelling time. Frankly the food in Swiss sucks, worse than in US. Dining in France is better.
I would say if one could afford the time and money, go for the Alps as much as you can. Later when you are getting older and having more and more constraints, Japan would then be the only choice (Yes, that's my story) and you will regret not having been to (or enough) the Alps.

Thanks for HKS and Mike's feedback. Yes, they are right on the point!
Japan's ski resorts are small comparing to those in USA (and also Alps even though I've never been there). Their runs are short. Snow is not as dry as that in the CO and UT.

One of the reasons that I hestitate to visit Alps is language. I don't know anything about Germany, French, or Italian.
I hope one that I can join some ski group to Alps and no need to worry those.

You should have no problem in communicating in English.
However the snow in the Alps is no where as good as Utah or Colorado. Most skiers in Hong Kong have not been to Utah or Colorado because it is as easy or easier just to go to Europe to ski. The food is better in Europe and no visa required. I have been to Utah a few times and to Vail a number of times. The snow was so good.
We were in Courchevel from Feb. 5 to Feb. 12, and the whole reagion has not snowed since January 2.:msn_mass: But we enjoyed the good sunny weather and the ambient
Oh, I thought you won't go that far for skiing. I haven't been to Couchevel. I don't know what other Alps resort you have been to. But what do you think about the ambient in the Alps resort? It's one of the attraction to me.

As Skier said, English is not a problem at least in those usual large resort.

Utah (SLC) is where I plan to go skiing next February.

English is not a probem in the Alps. There are many many British go there skiing every year, most Europeans understand English a bit.
I have more language problem while skiing in Chile! So finally I decided to speak Cantonese to them :gunsfiring:
PS. Swiss food is actually very good (much better than the American and British food). For breakafast, Birchermuesli is my favourite. For dinner, you can have fondue or raclette, if you like cheese. If you are a meat eater, you can have rippli (pork ribs) or Zurcher Geschnetzeltes with rosti - all very delicious. :drunk::icon_good:
cheese fondue and raclette is not bad but seems not suitable for everyday. for the rest of the food you mentioned, I may not have tried them but I can get my friend to make them. He is a local Hong Kong Chinese but works as a chef in Kloster and I always complain to him that Swiss food is no good. Now it's time for him to prove otherwise.
