accomodation in SHIGA KOGEN

I am also interested in going Shiga Kogen in January. Do you mind to share what is your latest plan? Have you sorted out where are you going to stay?

We went to Shigakogen two years ago and stayed at Villa Alpen! It is a traditional Japanese pension run by a very friendly Japanese family who speaks near-fluent English. Although the place appeared a bit old (and traditional), we thoroughly enjoy our stay there because of the convenient location, the very warm hospitality by the host family, and the homemade Japanese dishes after a full-day of skiing!

Interestingly, the father (who we refer to as the "Captain") used to be the coach of the Italian ski team, and the son (who teaches skiing there) used to teach skiing in Colarado. Ski hires are available at the pension itself. The place is convenient and basically a ski-in ski-out. It also has a bar for hanging out at night.

I always want to go back to the place, but this year I think we will be trying out Rusutsu. Maybe next year.

I will go to Shiga Kogen in Feb too. Just want to know which hotel be located in the area that have a variety of food choice and the closest to the ski lift. Please advise. Thanks

Try this small hotel just next to the slop and you can ski-in. I state there in year 2007 X'mas. Free ski and board for who stay in the Hotel. tradional Japanese food and bath room. Very nice, but you may need to have a little bit japanese language knowledge for communication. or you write chinese character to them as they may understand.

I am planning to ski at Shiga Kogen during CNY, with 2 kids who just learnt to ski in last season. So I think an area with more beginner slopes and family oritented will be nice. I briefly review the different ski areas, it seems to me Ichinose has a family ski family area that looks attrative to me. As this is my first time to ShigaKogen, I really want some more recommendation from the experts in this forum about the ski areas. Of course, recommendation on hotel is also appreciated. I just went thru Khuls yesterday and it looks good. Just want to compare some more ....thank you in advance.

Alpen is at Sun Valley, which is quite low in altitude comparatively. The snow normally is not as good as the places at higher altitude. Such as Ichinose. Or Takamagahara 高天原. These two areas together with Yakebitaiyama are good for beginners. There is one run in particular at Takamagahara 高天原 is very good for the first timer, slope is wide and gentle and importantly not too short.
