Ski boots' liners usually get a bit damp at the end of the day when you take them off, how does one dry them?

With custom footbed (eg.Sidas, Instaprint etc.), can one still use the boot warmer to dry the boots. Can the footbed change it's shape by heating?

The answer is it depends on what type of boot warmer you are using. It may not be very hot (say 50-60℃) to give an immediate change but over time will affect the shape of the product. The liners and footbed are moulded with heat and they can change with heat. So the best thing to use is one of the in-boot dryers from "Thermic" or "Hot Tronic" that blow air through the boot or just produce ambient heat enough to get rid of the moisture.

With Intuition liners, it is recommended to just air dry them out of the boot. The EVA liner material should dry very quickly.

Skiers and snowboarders looking for a spectacular journey from Queenstown to Treble Cone can book a scenic flight over the foothills of the Southern Alps this season.

The daily service by Glenorchy Air departs from Queenstown Airport, flies past Coronet Peak, Arrowtown and the historic Macetown area to land in the Matukituki Valley at the base of Treble Cone. Here clients are picked up by the ski area shuttle for a day’s skiing at Treble Cone before flying back to Queenstown.

Last year, skiers were hitting the slopes within 45 minutes of leaving Queenstown. Round trip flights cost NZ$269 per person and include all transfers as well as a Treble Cone day pass.

Treble Cone's 2012 season is scheduled for 28th June to 30th September.

Are there good lipsticks with UV protection for skiing? I used normal ones and my lips were a bit swollen after a few days of skiing in sunny weather. I guess they got sunburnt.

Had a great boot fitting experience with Stillskiing in Vancouver in Easter.

SS is so kind, patient and extremely helpful. He spent over 3 hours with me in his shop for a perfect boot fitting job that includes:

- asking for my skiing history, preference of skiing & assessing of skill level
- feet measurement & examination of foot problems
- boot shell fitting
- custom made foot beds
- custom made liners
- boot shell modification
- Trial fitting and re-adjustments to foot beds and boot shells, again and again

Thanks to SS and eLeung who gave me lots of advices in discussing my foot problems before going on the trip - a combination of unequal length and width of each foot, flat feet and big toe problem had seriously affected my balance, stability, edging and turns.
With the help of custom made foot beds and liners, and modified boot shells, and after one week's skiing, I found no signifacant pressure point in the boots, and felt much improvement in balance and stability with better ski control.

I'm extremely pleased with SS's perfect boot fitting work which did very well to me and solved my foot problems.

What is Alpine Touring (AT)?
Alpine touring is a combination of skiing and hiking.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3eUB...eature=related

The main difference between Alpine touring and Alpine Skiing is how you get to the top of the mountain - in alpine touring, you'll be relying on your own two feet instead of sitting on a chair lift.

Alpine touring equipment is similar to that of downhill skiing, and some people do use the same equipment for both. The biggest difference (and advantage) of alpine touring equipment is that it's typically much lighter and more flexible than the equipment you'd use on groomed trails. It is easy to carry and won't sink into fresh snow.

Alpine touring skis - also known as "randonnee", as a blend of cross-country and downhill skis. Like cross-country skis, they leave your heels free for the walking motion required to climb the mountain. But when you're ready to ski, you can secure your heel to the ski with bindings. Alpine touring skis are shorter and wider than most other skis, for easier maneuverability. And alpine touring boots are lighter, more flexible and more comfortable than downhill boots. Alpine ski poles are longer than other poles, because they're also used as walking sticks. But they're made with carbon-fiber material, so they're still very light.

How do you hike a mountain in skis?
"Skins" is used. They're strips of material that attach to the bottoms of your skis to increase traction during the ascent. In one direction, the skin is rough for a good grip, so you don't slide back down the mountain. In the reverse direction, it's smooth for sliding along the snow. So, when you get to the top, you peel them off, turn them around and restick them in the opposite direction for the ride down the mountain. They used to be made of real animal hide (hence the name), but now they're usually made of moleskin or a synthetic fabric. Skins are cut to fit the ski and are attached with a glue-like substance that allows you to remove and reattach them without leaving a residue. On very steep climb and when skis are unusable because of snow melt, crampons are used.

Just came across an article on footbed, I quote:

Q: Who needs custom footbeds / ski orthotics in their ski boots?
A: Everyone.
During the mid stance phase of walking (when the foot is in total contact with the ground) the foot is in a mobile adaptive or flexible condition. It is supposed to "pronate" to reduce shock to the leg, knee and back. This is the position the foot is in when it is "fixed" inside a ski boot. It is because the foot is flexible inside a ski boot that issues of foot pain and loss of turning efficiency come into play. In a ski turn the foot must bear a load up of to 3 times your body weight for an extended duration. Boot fit problems occur as the foot is forced to pronate (flatten) causing pressure of the foot against the boot shell. Typically this pressure occurs at the base of the little toe (sixth toe syndrome), the navicular and medial malleolus (inside ankle bones), and heel. Also, because the foot is flexible, the muscles and tendons of the foot are "fighting back" to resist the pronatory movement (flattening of the arch) causing aching in the arch and mid-foot. The obvious cure for this foot pain is to provide more architectural support for the foot in the boot.

Q: Why don't my expensive ski boots give me the support I need?
A: Because they were not made to your feet.
Everyone's feet are different and boot manufacturers design the boots to fit the greatest variety of feet possible. If they were to make the footbeds in the boots too supportive it would "offend" some peoples' feet and therefore they would not buy them. This is also why boot manufacturers tend to make their liners very cushioned, to initially feel comfortable to the greatest variety of foot shapes. The problem with this approach is that if the liner is too soft there is a corresponding loss of performance as the foot moves inside the shell. On the performance side, because custom footbeds / ski orthotics reduce pronation there is a more direct and efficient transfer of pressure from the lower leg to the ski edge. As the knee passes over the mid line of the foot, leverage to the edge is maintained by supporting the foot so that energy is not lost to the foot flattening. You can demonstrate this to yourself by standing with your shoes off and knees flexed over the toes. As you move your knee to the inside, you will notice the foot flattening as you start to exert pressure on the inside. This flattening of the foot translate to a loss of the effective lever arm of the lower leg to the ski edge.

Q: What should I look for in a ski orthotics / footbeds?
A: Results
There are a number of different ski orthotics / footbed systems available in ski shops. The most important component in selecting the right ski orthotics / footbeds, is the technician. A good technician will construct the ski orthotics / footbeds to match your foot shape, support the foot in the most efficient position and insure that the materials are supportive enough to provide control. Most of the ski orthotics / footbed systems use a semi-weight bearing method of capturing the shape of the bottom of the foot. Material is heated in an oven and the foot impression is taken by standing on or pressing the foot into a "pillow". This provides a very natural model of the bottom of the foot without creating too much arch. It is not desirable to have the arch too high as this will tend to throw the knee to the outside making it difficult to get leverage on the ski edge. After the ski orthotics / footbeds have been molded to the foot, there needs to be materials added to insure stability of the ski orthotics / footbeds in the boot.

Q: Will I need cants if I have custom ski orthotics / footbeds?
A: Maybe yes, maybe no.
The need for canting the bindings on the ski is greatly reduced by providing proper foot support in the boot while aligning the knee between the first and second toe. This is the optimal position of the knee just before the ski edge is pressured. However, for some people it will not be possible to get the knee into this position if they are excessively bow-legged, knock-kneed or have ankle inflexibility. In these cases it will be desirable to have ski boot canting or have the boot soles grind to help put the skier into the most efficient position possible.

Q: Are ski orthotics / footbeds transferable to other boots and footwear?
A: To other ski boots, yes; to other footwear, probably not.
If your feet have stopped growing, your ski orthotics / footbeds should transfer to your next pair of boots. Some minor trimming or adjustments may need to be made. However, the ski orthotics / footbeds for your ski boots may also work in your in-line skates. Footbeds designed for skiing will not work well in other footwear because they will most likely be too narrow and the materials too stiff. Using your ski orthotics / footbeds in shoes that flex at the forefoot will likely cause them to crack.

Q: Should I try on new boots with my ski orthotics / footbeds?
A: Absolutely
Your ski orthotics / footbeds can dramatically change the way a boot fits. With the foot supported, you may find that you will fit into a boot at least a half size smaller. This is because with proper support, the foot will not lengthen as it does when it pronates. The foot will also not be as wide if the mid-foot is supported. If there is an adjustment that can be made to the cuff of the boot, it should be done with the footbeds in place.
