Yes, you would be a lot better off with a 4WD should you decided to drive to the ski resort in NZ. Most of the roads are advised to put on chains as you go higher up in the mountain, so you would be better off with a 4WD.

With my past experience, when you rent a car in the south island in winter time, there is no extra fees to request for the chain from the rental company anyway, so you can still request for one just in case. I advise you to familiar yourself with putting on the chain before you hit the road as it is no fun to struggle in the cold with freezing hands to do the job. There will also be staff there to help with a fee of NZ $ 20 to NZ $ 30 if I am not wrong.

It is quit a drive to go up to Cardrona. So get ready! Have fun.
