ski vs snowboard

If somebody posted before, i am sorry.

the question is which one is harder to learn@@

coz, my classmates are going to S.S. on 2/14 and they never S.S. before. then i dont which one i can recommand, easiler for them.

Also, what is the reason for you guys to learn Skis, or snowboarding@@?

If your classmates have never ever skied or snowboard before and are going on Feb. 14, my recommendation is to try skiing -- basics for skiing are easier since, at least, one can stand on two feet in a wedge and be able to balance on the skis, and with a bit of lesson by another skier, he or she will be able to come down an easy slope with some turns, and thus, may enjoy this trip. Try 130 cm skis, not any longer.

The first few days to learn snowboarding is difficult since one's feet are 'bound' to the snowboard and falling quite often is for sure. With only a few days in the ski resort, they can hardly be able to come down any slope and enjoy it.

But then again, will there be any experienced skier or snowboarder that will teach them? And just curious, are you a skier or rider (snowboarder)?

What and where is "S.S."?

Just a suggestion - ask your friend to take a few hours of lesson at Slope 8 in North Point before the trip this wekend if possible. :)

i used to think that skiing is easier to learn, but now i think it depends on the person.

my friend tried to learn skiing, but he had such a hard time. his could not keep his legs together, therefore fell many many times.... (like a 一字馬... :D)

then he tried snowboard (same day), and found it much easier.

but once you get over the 1st day. both are ok i think.

I think all have been said. I try to guess another phenomina. alpine sbdr takes fewer lessons to become expert when skiers probably have to take lesson for life to get just better. :)

I viewed the FIS parallel giant slalom snowboard competition last Sunday. Though I knew nothing about snowboard, I noted that the riders wore hard snowboard boots which resembled those of ski boots.

Though the piste was not particularly choppy (from a skier's point of view), I found the professional riders had difficulties in carving. Quite a few of them even lost control and failed to complete the race. Is it the inherited difference between ski and snowboard?

Derek,
The course where the FIS competition held is specially prepared, it is not exactly in the condition where we usually skied on. It is more ice than snow, so don't be surprised that the competitors lost their grip and slid off.

For the way how the course is prepared, please refer to posting #10 of the following thread:

Actually it was the narrator who said that the competitors lost their grip due to the choppy piste rather than the icy surface...... :o

the condition is the same whether skiing or boarding and icy or not. But with skis, u have 2 planks to adjust your balance if the surface is less then manicured smooth.

Choppy or not really depends on the speed you're traveling. The tiny little bump could send the speedy skier unbalance specially they have to turn in such a high speed.

For icy smooth surface, there is no surprise but then they are push even harder towards the limit.

Yes, it is like ice skating but "on the slope", and a pretty steep slope.

Whenever I went down the downhill racing slope at Whistler (Dave Murray), I keep wondering how possible human could race down so damn fast. Next time, when people visit Whistler, go feel it yourself. :)

Having watched some ladies went downhill in San Sicario in person, and had to ski across the piste later to get home, I can assure anyone that the downhill piste in San Sicario good enough for World Cup racing is harder than rock hard. Reasonably new consumer skis with sharp edges are no match against the water-injected DH race course, even when it was just traversing across it!
