Sharing from South Island,NZ

Hi everyone,

Finally finished my 3 weeks holiday in NZ, and would like to share my experience in skiing in South Island on this trip.

First of all, if you fly to Queenstown on an overcast day. Do make sure that you fly on Air New Zealand as their plane has more chances to get into Queenstown. I had a heart attack news when I was told that we might end up in Invercargill on an Qantas flight. Luckily, we got in just in time.

We went to the Remarkable on the first day, follow by the Cardrona then the Corenet Peak. Half way driving up the hill, we had to put chains on the wheels of the car. We requested the chains from the rental company, otherwise it would cost us NZ$40 each time you need it on the road.

I must say that I was happy with the beginner area there. The two magic carpets were in reasonably length so you don't ended up keep fighting with the ski school to use them. It was a good spot to have my 3 1/2 son warm up before we head up to the chair lifts.

Cardrona was one big open field and it was no good for a winding day skiing with kid. We had to keep going indoor to keep warm and wasting a lot of time. The beginner area is the worse in compare with the 3 resorts. But once you can move on to the green runs then Cardrona has the most gentle runs for family to enjoy.

Coronet Peak has the least facilities for beginner and in fact, it has only ONE green run. This is the only time I see queue at the chair lift on the whole trip. However, I must say that the green run is wide and gentle and it is a true family run.

To sum it up, I would still call it a good trip. I was not expecting my little son can do much skiing with us but he did better than we thought. :)

You would definitely have a heart attack if you were on the Qantas flight that has a 2 metre hole opened up in mid air. :D

Were you based at Queenstown and did you have a chance to ski at Treble Cone?

There are self service apartments in Cardrona, and one of the services they provide (for a small fee) is they can do your grocery shoppping in Queenstown for you while you are skiing during the day.

Good sense of humur there!;)

Yes, I was based in Queenstown and drove to all the 3 resorts mentioned.

Unfortunately I did not have time for the Treble Cone as I was only there for 3 whole days. (Had to rush back to Hamilton to move house with family!:D)

According to some friends back in NZ, North Island has a reasonable season too!
