From Auckland to Whakapapa

Hi, I need some suggestions on the transportation from Auckland to Whakapapa in August.

I heard that I can take Nakedbus, but seems too long to be there. Can I take train? Kiwi railway?

Thanks!!

Naked Bus and Intercity Coachlines/Coach NZ runs a bus service from Auckland to Whakapapa and National Park Village, but as you said, it is a long bus ride.

Alternatively there is a scenic train service from Auckland that runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the winter months (although some days it doesn’t) and stop at National Park Village and Ohakune. http://www.kiwirailscenic.co.nz/

One question - how do you plan to travel from National Park to Whakapapa?

I guess from National Park to Whakapapa, it only takes 10 mins shuttle ride, doesn't it?

By the way, how about I drive? Will it be very difficult?

Driving would be the easiest and quickest option.

Driving from Auckland to Whakapapa is not difficult, roads are usually clear. But you will need snow chains to drive up the mountain from Whakapapa or Turoa to the ski resort.

Million dollar question - yes if you know what to do. No if you have never tried before.

Please note, snow chains are sometimes not required if you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Based on my own experience renting a 4 wheel drive made my life much easier (especially if you can get one with snow tires). My friend had to chain up almost everyday but we were pretty much hassle free.

From the resort website:

Occasionally, all vehicles (4WDs included) will be required to fit chains in order to drive on the mountain roads. When travelling to Turoa, chain hire is available on the Ohakune mountain road for $30 - fitting and removal included, you won't even need to step out of your vehicle! Please note that while our friendly staff will try to accommodate everyone, some vehicles with larger rims or low profile tires and some larger sedans and station wagons may not be able to fit chains. There is no chain hire on the Bruce Road to Whakapapa, however there are a number of shuttle services offering transport to the top of the Bruce Rd for days that chains are required. Fit chains to the driving wheels of the vehicle, i.e. on the back wheels of a rear wheel drive. Please do not hesitate to contact customer services on 07 892 4000 for more information. - See more at: http://www.mtruapehu.com/winter/Road....V2DiocBc.dpuf

I have a bit of winter driving experience, and managed to get a 20-foot motorhome up without too many issues, other then getting a bit iced up at the top. The most important thing is to take it easy - nice and slow both on the way up, and especially on the way down.

Did on the way down see a small sedan lose control and understeer off the road. Happily only minor injuries but the car was upside down and likely a writeoff. So be careful.

I drove almost everywhere on east coast and Canada ski resorts without any snow chains on those SUVs. I believe snow chain will be needed if the vehicles are heavy loaded or large, like large vans or bus. Keep extra distance with the front car and drive slow in conditions when new snow keep coming down. Keep away black ice if you can see it. Anyway, drive in manageable speed in the conditions that you feel comfortable. You will enjoy driving in the snow, especially, when you're going to skiing.

Snow Tires is mandatory in Quebec.

better to rent 4wd and drive slower than usual to get up the mountain, not necessary safer to rent 4wd but saves you the hassle of putting on/off chains

Thanks all for the valuable advice. By the way, do I have to apply an international driving license? Or the Hong Kong driving license is fine? Thanks.
