Repost of "Slope8 滑雪技術討論 6 (mogul skiing)"

How are moguls or bumps formed? They are the result of continuous short radius turns made by skiers.

There are many ways to tackle the moguls. Many have seen competition mogul skiing, and that is not the intention here. They ski a very straight line down the moguls since time is a factor in scoring points.

You need to master most of the basics that we have discussed so far to ski the moguls well.

When you come to a mogul, you have to flex all your lower body joints to absorb the increased pressure, and then extend your legs again when you pass the mogul (see diagram 1). This will keep your COM (Centre of Mass) in more or less in a straight line.

Your legs acts like the shock absorbers of a car going over bumpy roads. See photo 2.

Diagram 3 shows two different paths (there are infinite number of choices that one can ski through the moguls). The one on the left is easier to perform with more pivoting on top of moguls, side slip into the troughs, by-pass one mogul, and go to the next mogul and repeat the process. The path on the right diagram need more refined edging skill.

Video clip:

http://www.slope8.com/jn/Moguls.m1v

(Actually this video clip is more advanced mogul skiing, and does not represent either of the two paths in diagram 3. The demo team members are skiing mostly the trough (between the moguls). Due to faster speed, they are thrown airborne sometimes.)

From the above video clip you can clearly see:
-No upper body rotation
-Equal weighting on both skis, and the feet need to be close together (otherwise the mogul might 'split' the skis and go different directions.
-Good fore/ aft balance and body angulation
-Good solid pole plants
-Good pivoting skills and appropriate amount of edging
-Good absorption and extension of the legs

Not easy to do all the above well! But, to learn mogul skiing, one can tackle one or two moguls at a time, and do not be intimidated by the whole mogul field. Of course, do not go to ‘real steep terrain' mogul fields.

Just re-read Skier's original thread on Mogul Skiing (above), I think Skier has nailed it -

Moguls are the result of continuous short radius turns made by skiers, they are like snowflakes. No two are the same. Each has its own size and shape, and that is what makes mogul skiing such a challenge.

There are different ways to ski mogul, the trick is to synchronize your movements with the contours of the mogul field. This requires you to make some turns with your legs extended, and some with your legs flexed. And you have to be able to twist your skis at different speeds — sometimes fast, sometimes slow. When your movements match the ups and downs and ins and outs of the terrain, the road gets a lot smoother.

You might have seen competition mogul skiing on the TV, Youtube etc, and skiing like them is not the intention here. Those WC skiers ski a very straight line down the moguls (and I do not think those moguls are natural) since time is a factor in scoring points.

Also, refer to the following thread for reference:
http://www.hkssa.net/showthread.php?t=2892

Practice on a small mogul field next time you go skiing. :)

Just curious how many HK skiers enjoy mogul skiing, especially hitting the zipperline. :D

Both my daughter and I love skiing moguls although we can't always hit the zipperline. Skiing moguls need more movement of the lower body.

If you come to Whistler, don't miss the bump zone underneath the Emerald chair of Whistler which is a very gentle mogul slope.

Hope more people can enjoy mogul skiing.

Nice to hear your daughter come with you to hit the moguls, so jealous!

Thanks for your tips. I will give it a try this Christmas holidays :)

I should be skiing on Whistler few days this Christmas with my son since my daughter will be in Hong Kong on December. See if we can ski few runs together. May be I can give you some tips to ski bumps with less effort and make mogul skiing more fun.

Thanks for your kind offer. Sure, we would do few turns together if the timeslot is fit for us. You may send PM to me once your schedule is confirmed.

The following video is taken at one small bump run on Whistler. A good place to get feeling on bumps since it's not steep and bumps are small.

Thanks, moguls_skier, for your sharing. It is very nice mogul skiing. If you don't mind to share with us, you may give some tips and explanation based on the video. Of course, I am very happy to buy a drink to you as thanks for your great contribution to us. :)
