First, need to know whether you need to wear spectacles when skiing, or do you wear contact lens. If you don't need to wear spectacles or you wear contact lens, then you can wear sunglasses or googles depends on the weather and your preference.
However, when you buy sunglasses, make sure they are good quality and preferably wrap-around. Never ever ski with glass lenses, always plastic.
Goggles are preferable when visibility is poor and for powder or serious mogul skiing. If you wear prescription glasses, look for special goggles and sunglasses that accommodate them.

When choosing a pair googles, the feel of the goggle foam on your face should be consistent all the way around the goggles, there shouldn't be any uncomfortable pressure points. There shouldn't be any gaps between your skin and the goggles where too much air could flow through, and dry out your eyes. However there should be air portals to let air flow through the skiing goggle to keep them fog-free. You should also look for double lenses which won't fog up on you easily.

As for colour of lens -
Clear lenses are best for extremely stormy conditions or for skiing at night.
Lemon, or yellow lenses are best for stormy conditions and overcast days, they increase contrast.
Vermillon or pink lenses increase contrast in most conditions. The lens with a silver gun mirror is ideal for most skiing conditions.
Citrus or orange lenses also increase contrast, and are great for bright days. Choose an option with a mirror for a darker lens for the brightest conditions.

I will go Niseko for ski during Feb as well. I just rented googles last time but would like to buy one now (as I will stay there for 5 days this time!).

Any recommended place that I can buy googles in HK? seems not much available around... And, what is the price range? Is it possible to get one less than HK$500? (I just learn ski this time and not sure if I am able to continue... :D)

Thanks!!

In reply to skyarrow,

The colour on the lens helps to enhance contrast in different light conditions. Yellow lenses are best for really cloudy and snowy days. Orange and rose lenses are best of partly cloudy days. Blue and dark lenses are for sunny days but doesn't do much to boost contrast. Fire lenses are for really sunny days where there's no clouds. The silver/mirror coating is to decrease light transmission. Even on overcast days, the light levels will be higher than you might think since light intensity will generally be higher at high altitudes.

The most versatile lens is a mirrored orange/red lens. It cuts down transmission and enhance contrast.

Also, lens colours in the red end of the rainbow blocks out blue light which is easier on the eye as objects will appear 'warmer'.

hy, mattreislip, thank you very much. The information is very useful.
Actually, I am just a beginner in ski. I am looking for a new goggle and other related equipment for a ski trip on Jan of 2010. Still have to learn more before the trip. :)

Skyarrow, hope you enjoy the sport. There is another posting on goggle, helmet and sock as well. Hope you find it useful as well. For clothing it is important to have water proof and air breathing properties. Be ready to dress in layers so that you can adjust for different temperature siutation during skiing day. Have fun.

Properly fitted goggle should:
a/. Fit comfortably on your face with no pressure points.
b/. Form a soft, but snug seal on your face. If any holes exist in the seal between your face and your goggles this will allow air to fill your goggles, causing your eyes to water. It must fit well on your nose and other features of your face.

Refer to posting #2 & 12.
Go to the shop and try out different Oakley models, see which one fits you face best.
