How about Gun Barrel and East Bowl, are they steep and are the bumps on Gun Barrel really huge and how long is the runs.

Thanks
Ler me summarize the whole Tahoe area skiing environment.

Worldwide, each ski area has some challenge terrains, Heavenly is no exception, however, Squaw has the most challenging terrain in Tahoe. Basically, if you are an advanced snow sports person, you can "ski" all double diamond trails whole day without repeating the same run and if you really know your area and can jump cliffs, it might take a whole week to finish all the runs. Take a look at this book and video

http://www.squallywood.com/

The book has pointed out 130 cliff areas you can jump and you can joing Robb's guided tour for some real Gnar trip. Do not even thinking of jumping the cliffs if you are not prepared.

At Squaw, other than cliffs and area boundary, the runs are not marked or roped, if you can do it, the ski area will allow you to ski on it, trees, rocks, and cliffs all.

Heavenly, unfortunatlly, is the third most scenic area of Tahoe's 13 ski areas. The lake view is best at Homewood, Diamond Peak is the second and Heavenly is in the third place. Heavenly's lake view is nice, but it is too far away from the lake whereas you can "ski" into the lake at Homewood, its view is breath taking. You can ask "fish" on this board about it. I took him around three years ago and we were at Homewood.

It is entirely possible to ski and stay at Tahoe for $100US per day per person, if you are willing to take the bus. I do not like the bus, because there is only one going in the morning and one returning after the ski area closes. If you miss it, you are not going to ski that day as it is for reservation only. We locals always drive and the cost is much cheaper, we regularly get rooms Free in Reno's casinos.

Another problem of bus reservation is that the weather, Squaw is nice but often times it gets windy so the upper mountains are closed. Because the orientains of each ski resort, you can ski at NS or Homewood on a windy day if Squaw or Alpine is closed. If you are committed to a ski bus, you can not change resorts on a dime.

ppl ski at Tahoe the entire season often get two season passes, one at Squaw and the other "double shammy" which is NS and Sierra. The double whammy is for windy days alternative. You can get a ski lease for around $800 and another $900 for the passes, for $1,700 you can ski at Tahoe for the whole season, food and transporation extra. That is almost $10/day.

From the road, you will only see two lifts going up at Homewood, which is not very inviting. However, the ski area really opens up when you are up. Very nice.

Jack - any experience at SLC (Utah)?

In addition to the Tahoe Value Pass that allowed skiers to ski both Heavenly and Northstar-at-Tahoe, those wishing to ski both sides of Lake Tahoe now have a second option.

Kirkwood and Alpine Meadows have announced a new 2011-12 season pass offering in which skiers have access to both resorts throughout the season. Additionally with the new product, pass holders will have access to Homewood Mountain Resort on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore, Durango Mountain Resort in Durango, Colorado, and Red Lodge Mountain Resort in Montana.

The year before I did the Colorado resorts. This year I went to Vermont. The next logical choice is Lake Tahoe but some Canadian friends may want to see me in Whistler or Lake Louise next season.

The season ticket quoted by you is unbeatable bearing in mind the normal ski pass in USA is among the most expensive.

The season pass is the best if you are know you are definitely going there and buy early as the daily ski pass is normally over US$80.

I am considering taking a side trip to Utah or Colorado for a week.

And some resorts charge around $100/day at ticket windows for high season weekend days.
Quite right.
Even at Squaw and other resorts in Tahoe, they increase the window price for the day pass by about 10 % during the festive period (eg. the week between Christmas and New Year).

For the second consecutive season, Lake Tahoe’s ski resorts are reporting an increase in skier visitation numbers that outperformed the percentage growth at U.S. ski resorts as a whole by more than four times the national average.

Nearly eclipsing the all-time mark set during the 2004-05 season, the more than 3.6 million skier visits during the 2010-11 season marks the second busiest on record replacing last season’s impressive double-digit growth.

Concluding the 2010-11 season, several Ski Lake Tahoe resorts including Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley and Kirkwood will open their lifts for skiing and snowboarding during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend.

Tahoe ski resorts had the best showing because this year they had the largest snow fall in the history, almost 800 inches. Normal snowfall is in the 400-500 inches range. When they have a bad snow fall, the attendents are not going to be the same. Ski resorts are totally dependent on the snow falls, there is nothing to compare growth or no growth. ppl flok to snow, not the resort is better or worse.
