Just back from Thredbo, NSW

Just came back from Thredbo on Thursday.

Good snow conditions and weather this week because there was large dump of snow (more than 70cm) last week. The resort was not overcrowded as the OZ school holidays not yet started. It will become crowded started next week when school holidays commence.

Most chairlifts are now opened without long queues. Deep snow on the tops and temperatures were subzero even in daytime. Cruiser area are good for intermediates and runs in front valley are good for more advanced skiers/SBers.

My trip was very good except got an accident on last day....Got caught on few bumps in a blue run and couldn't land properly...smashed on the ground and twisted the right knees...MCL in the right knee was torn, but luckily ACL remained okay. The medical centre in the resort were full of patients, but the doctors were quite good and quickly diagnosed the causes...but I saw quite a few others torn off ACL there...On mountain doctor said I was very lucky as I only hurt the MCL which does not require knee surgery.

Now cannot walk but should recover in 2~4 weeks hopefully.

Wish you could get well within 2 to 4 weeks.:)

Just wonder why the medical center was full of patients? Whether the slopes were very bad condition? Anyway, I am sure you still have many chances to hit the slope again this winter. Take care!

Thanks eLeung.

The medical centre was full of patients not because of the bad conditions of slopes. Doctors told me that he managed 10 ~20 people every day normally and many of them got ACL torn injury. When I was there for 45 mins, I saw at least two others got ACL completely torn apart, and need knee surgery later.

I guess accidents always happen somewhere on slopes only that we do not notice them.

I think I was really lucky this time. BTW...I put on SKIN while skiing....not sure if it indeed helped to prevent further serious knee injury or not. I may think of putting knee support next time to prevent knee injury?

Its good that you have your ACL intact. I heard that knee support can't do much help. It can prevent the ACL in case of over-forward extension but can not protect the ACL from twisting, which, I guess is more likely case of ACL injury in skiing. I would try to look for better binding and strengthen the muscles around the knee to avoid ACL injury. :)

also I heard it was 4 ACL torn every 1 thousand skiing day. this figure is going down recently. so you can get a pretty good estimate by guessing how many skier (snowboarders not counted) is on the mountain during the day.

i love line graphics

It seems you got a lot of information about ACL injury. Did you get the ACL injury before?

yes, i learn it the hard way. I did a lot of research afterward. And it's also the major motive for me to pursue learning to ski. :)

Which city are you living, Mel or Sydney? How do you get there?
I would like to know if there's year round ticket for the ski resort as it looks good.

I live in Sydney and it usually takes about 6 ~ 6.5 hrs to drive to Perisher Blue or Thredbo.

Thredbo got a lot of on-snow accomodations and there is a village opposite to the ski resorts...all the on-snow accommodations are built around the village.

On the other hand, Perisher Blue has limited on-snow accomodations (at central valley and Smiggins Holes). Only smiggins holes accomodation provides private overnight parking. For accomodation at central valley, you need to park your vehicle in Bullocks Flat and take ski tube trains up to the mountain. The Perisher accomodations will transport your luggage from the ski tube terminal to your place free by appointment only.

Bargain accomodations are found in Jindabyne, which is a small town down the mountains about 30 ~35 kms to Perisher and Thredbo. But every day, you may need to drive at least 30 mins up the mountain.

Once you chose on-snow accomodation, you don't really want to pick Jindabyne anymore because it is just too far and waste too much time to travel daily. For the past two years, I stayed at Smiggins holes and Thredbo on-snow accomodations and I was very happy about the arrangements.

I hope this info help.

I drove from Sydney to Thredbo once (about 5 years ago), as "Ozman" said, it takes about 6 hours from Sydney (or 2.5 hour from Canberra). Much of the road from Sydney to Canberra is highway. From Canberra you take the Monaro highway to Cooma and then take the Kosciusko road to Jindabyne follow by the Alpine Way to Thredbo.

Also, you can fly from Sydney. Cooma Airport have daily flights from Sydney and Melbourne during the ski season, there are connecting express shuttle services from the airport to Thredbo.
