Milky Way (Via Lattea)

Hi Mike or others,

Do you think it is advisable to drive from Milan Linate airport to Via Lattea in coming CNY? The thing that worries me most is snow chain and driving on snow.

You are flying to Milan Linate Airport, not Malpensa Airport?
It is the Italian law that you have to carry snow chains in the car if you go skiing in the winter months.

I am actually thinking of going (by car) to Sauze d'Oulx myself in March. The motorway from Milan all the way to and pass Torino should be free of snow. The road to Via Lattea is all mountain road, I do not know how well will the Italians keep the road clear.

Linate, not Malpensa, cheap tickets

Maybe there is really a necessity to put on the snow chain if there is such a law. I don't know how to put snow chain on wheels. Sounds risky.

I think Mike means you have to carry the snow chains in the car by law. Whether to put them on the wheels or not depends on the actual road condition.

You should put on the snow chains when they are needed even if there is no law telling you to do so.

As for how-to.... there's youtube video to consult before the trip and other drivers going up the mountain probably will be happy to show you how if you really have problems with it.

The snow-chains nowadays are a lot easier to install than the old days. Be prepared to get your hands dirty, I usually bring a pair of long rubber gloves (kitchen type) with me, just in case. If you want to drive to any ski resorts in the Alps or in USA, you have to be prepared to use snow chains as and when required, I have seen 4 wheel drive vehicle slipping, spinning on icy roads.
