Suggestion of Austria ski resort from Munich

Hi Guys, may need a little advice from you all. I'm now actually living in Munich, but also a newbie to the city as it is only my first month here. Haven't been to any of the Austrian ski resorts before, but everyone suggests me should go to those in Austria as Munich is so close to them.

any good suggestion which one i should start with in this X'mas?

we are planning to go during x'mas for a week of ski holiday. 5 adults from beginner to intermediate level + 2 small kids (2.5 and 4 years old, so ski school may need for them!). Sure we will drive, and will consider to book apartment/ house as we are quite a big group this them.

Can you pls suggest me a ski resort which is good for family, and with enough snow (i understand X'mas snow cannot be guaranteed :(

appreciated in advance with any of your input. So excited to be back to Europe for skiing!!!

I heard garmish is a good bet. only 1 hr from munich. Serfaus Fiss Ladis of austria would be less crowded. Just wonder if you could still find a room.

loosing weight across the line

Finally was able to ski in Kitzbühel this winter, it was such a nice place and no doubt it is one of the best ski resort in Austria. I think the taste of European is a bit different from Asian skier. Most German people recommend me to go to ski welt instead of Kitzbühel due to the high price in Kitzbühel. But I personally think the overall infrastructure n facilities in Kitzbühel is really the world class and much more service oriented. Last year I stayed in Söll, it was still nice but it is just not the "Best" rank. I think if any of u have driving license, should definitely try n enjoy driving among the Alps. Pick to stay in an apartment or holiday house, where is very affordable and so European life style it is!

Wonderful. If you like Austrian resorts, you may consider Lech, At. Anton or Ischgl for next season. Actually, Dolomites is about the same distance from Munich.

Mike! What is actually the good and bad things about Austria ski resort??? I pick Austria simply because it is close to Munich. And very seldom Asian can be seen in there, but many British people, n the food on the mountain is very typical German food which I don't like. These are my impression!!! N the other add value is that Austria ski resorts I found are mostly kids friendly n dog friendly, which is main factors for my family. Sure will try your other suggestion n probably will pick a place to ski one more time before Easter. We went to Dolomites for hiking in last summer. The view was so astonishing but my German friend warned me that it is an expensive ski resort. But Italian food is so tempting and there are wine yards around and it's actually a good choice to shop for süd Tirol wine. If going there in winter, do u know snow chain is needed or not?

You are already so close to the Alps. Most ski resorts in Austria, Italy and Eastern Switzerland are all under 4 hours drive from Munich. You have many many choices - from mega resort to tiny ski resort with very local atmosphere. Where you go really depends on your preference.

In the old days, I went skiing in the French Alps and western Switzerland normally because they were closer to drive to from London. Austria was just too far and more expensive. On the other hand, all ski resorts are expensive, mountain restaurants in particular. Also, convenience and cost go in parallel. Now, HK has direct flight to both Zurich and Milan, so it cuts the driving time to those ski resorts in central and eastern Switzerland.

When you go skiing in the Alps, do not expect to eat Chinese food. Personally I found the French and Swiss dishes are nice, Italian OK, Austrian food is a bit boring. As you said, Brits are everywhere, especially in the bars, and there are less orientals on the slope (unlike Whistler!)

If you drive to the Alps in the winter months, there is a requirement in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland that you have to carry a set of snow chains in the car and put them on as dictated by the road condition and /or as directed by the local authority.

How was the snow?
Did you do the streif?
Worth a place on the ole bucket list?

What a shame that I didn't try the streif! Simply because of the strange weather last week it was. It was totally foggy under 1500m height, but once u are above 1500m it was totally bright n sunny with clear blue sky. I went there for 8 days n out of 4 days with such super sunny weather. People stayed at the mountain top for whole day and would take cable car down in order to avoid the foggy down hill part. The kid ski lesson all moved up to the blue run on the mountain because of such nice weather. Snow is enough, a thin layer of powder snow could be seen every morning. I would say it is a must go resort for family as there are many nice blue run on the mountain top, but for me there are a bit too much of beginner around so really have to ski with caution.

I see... well given that sort of weather trying the streif would be a recipe for disaster! Thanks for the review of the area.
