Les Grands Montets

Does anyone try Les Grands Montets in Chamonix (the black off-piste run) before? Is it very difficult?

Les Grands Montets is a large area, the top station is at 3300m and with north facing slope, good snow is almost guaranteed.

The top station is the highest point you can reach without walking, it only has two marked pistes. But with off-piste skiing dropping off from three directions which will take you either on to the Argentiere Glacier, the Mer Du Glace or the north face of the Grands Montets.

If you like powder, this is the place.

Tried once. One of the toughest I came across.

It is a marked piste that is never groomed. Table size mogul if you like them! Definitely for the experts.

Good that I chickened out on that last time: caught the cable car up, walked up, snaped pictures , walked down and caught the cable car back... and of course I must be the only one doing that so getting weird looks from the lifties and other passengers. Figured that even if I didn't get into trouble skiing down (and I happened to read the entire the mountain rescue price list on the way up when waiting for the lift), I would have a hard time walking down the 200 steps down just getting onto the piste.

But this didn't stop me from getting into trouble skiing down from mid-station to the carpark (large soft moguls field in spring condition with the 4pm carpark-bound crowds on a saturday and I was a reasonably good novice)

Yes Grands Montets is steep and its black runs are the real deal for the experts. You need a pair of strong legs to come down there. The main run back to car park should be attempted early to avoid the crowd.

This is the place where there doesn't seem to be many flat spots to take a rest.

You are absolutely right about Grands-Montets being steep (and I didn't even attempt that two ungroomed black). I don't know if I imagine it, the red runs going back to the mid station seems to be steeper than other resorts (but largely deserted as most people just went off-piste).
I was totally exhausted just to go from mid-station to the carpark (so glad that the ski bus stop was close to the end of the run as I didn't have strength to walk to the carpark - but then I had to battle with getting on to the ski bus as there were so many people).

I guess I wasn't thinking properly when it came to planning my day at Grands-Montets. It makes a lot of sense to go down the main run earlier instead of leaving it til the end in hind sight (other people told me the run had been in much better condition earlier that day). For that matter, I didn't think clearly on my whole three days in Chamonix and wasted a lot of opportunities - wasted a day in Balme, didn't go sight-seeing (didn't go to the town at night and not realised my lift pass includes the Aiguille du Midi cable car until I got back).

Had fun there though... wish I'm still in Europe... miss the Alps and the Dolomites
